Why do people keep treating ChatGPT like it has intentions?

I keep noticing that we talk to - and sometimes about - ChatGPT like we're interacting with a mind, a person, not with software. We ask it a question, and it answers in full sentences. It sounds thoughtful, sometimes empathetic or humorous (depending on your settings) and all the sudden people start talking about it like it has beliefs, motives, or some hidden agenda. "It's out to get you." That really feels like the wrong mental model to me.
