ChatGPT has rolled out a new model selection UI for ChatGPT (both on web and iOS) that, as a software engineer, I think obviously shows they're moving to what Sam Altman has wanted for a while: a single evergreen option. The way you kill off something popular is you make it hard to find and hard to use. Then after you've killed it, you point to a single month of data, there at the end, showing its unpopularity. Here's how they're doing that: This new model picker is buried. The only hint of its existence is a tiny downward arrow. Most will not click this.
