Why do anime models feel so stagnant compared to realistic ones?

I've been checking Civitai almost daily, and it feels like 95% of anime models and generations are still pretty bad/crude, it is either that old-school crude anime look, western stuff or just outright junk. Meanwhile, realistic models keep dropping bangers left and right: constant new releases, insane traction, better prompt following, sharper details, etc. After getting used to decent AI images, I just can't go back to the typical low-effort anime slop.
