What AI capability from the last 12 months genuinely surprised you and not just impressed you

There's a difference between being impressed by something you expected to get better and being genuinely surprised by something you didn't think was coming yet. for me it was how fast multimodal reasoning closed the gap with text-only performance. i expected it to lag behind for much longer.
